So much more than just a clock & calendar.
With Earth Clock, you get ReConnected; to the living Earth & solar system.
Earth Clock clearly demonstrates the 3 main planetary, astronomical rhythms that are the most basic units of a clock & calendar:
- The Solar Day is the 24 hour period of time it takes for the Earth with a time zone-spanning hour hand (marking your location on the globe) to make a complete rotation relative to the Sun fixed at noon at the top of the dial. Note the circle of illumination, where night meets day, and if you watch over the course of a year, you will see it rhythmically tilt above and below the Earth’s spin axis, the north pole. The 4 corners of a solar day are clearly visible at all times: midnight, Sun rise, noon & Sun set.
- The lunar Month is the approximately 29.5 day period of time it takes for the Moon to orbit the Earth, going through its phases relative to the Sun, fixed at noon at the top of the dial. The 4 corners of a lunar month are new Moon, waxing 1/2 Moon, full Moon & waning 1/2 Moon.
- The Seasonal Year of 365.2425 days is the average amount of time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun, or for the Sun to apparently circle the ecliptic, starting and ending at the ascending or spring equinoctial node, which marks 0º right ascension on the celestial coordinate system. With Earth Clock, the Sun is always fixed at noon at the top of the dial, so the stars marking the celestial sphere (and the signs of the zodiac) appear to rotate around the Earth once every seasonal year. There are 4 corners of a seasonal year: spring equinox, summer solstice, fall equinox & winter solstice. The progression of the Sun along the ecliptic is translated into a progression of the year indicator along the 365.2425 solar day-blocks marked on the calendar band.
These three planetary, astronomical rhythms are in fact planetary, photosynthetic biorhythms, involving the distribution of light & heat from the Sun & Moon, to photosynthetic plants growing all over the surface of Earth. These three rhythms are agricultural biorhythms that every society has celebrated throughout history, and our ability to predict and anticipate these agricultural biorhythms is one of the greatest scientific accomplishments of our society.
Earth Clock will also help you get:
ReConnected; to other Cultures, all around the globe.
Earth Clock offers a variety of calendar-bands to choose from. At this early stage of development, only three calendar-bands are available: the Roman (Gregorian), the Baha’i and the Chinese agricultural calendar-bands. The first 2 are free, and the Chinese calendar-band is available as a 99¢ in-app purchase.
Each culture on this planet is defined by their calendar and how they organize time. Isn’t it strange how almost every other culture besides your own seems alien. What we share in common is the underlying agricultural events (solar day, lunar month & seasonal year) that all calendars follow.
There are 3 main types of calendars: lunar, solar & lunisolar calendars. The Roman (Gregorian) and Baha’i are both solar calendars, while the Chinese is a lunisolar calendar. (The Islamic is an example of a lunar calendar.) Other calendars in development include: The Julian, the Coptic & Ethiopic, the Islamic, the Hebrew, the Ecclesiastical, the old & modern Hindu, the Persian, the Mayan, the Tibetan and the French Revolutionary calendar. Each of these calendars will be available as a 99¢ in-app purchase as soon as they are ready. We’ll keep you posted.
Earth Clock will change the way you think of space and time and the Earth. Note that you’re looking at the Earth from an unusual perspective; the axial perspective. And let me tell you, proper perspective changes everything.
Every time you look to see What time is it?, you are reminded of the fact that we are all of us living on a planet, the “heart planet,” the living Earth which carries you & feeds you, like a Mother. EarthClock is the heart monitor of this living, cosmic-scale photosynthetic being.
